Since 1988, there have been at least 50,000 refugees resettled in Utah. Seventy percent of them are women and children who fled their homes because of fear of persecution and violence. These individuals endured immense hardships losing family members, homes and a safe, secure way of life. Many arrive in Salt Lake completely destitute of essential items and the skills to function in a new society. They need basic necessities as well as an adequate support system to rebuild their new lives in this complex new world. Umoja Generation understands the struggles of refugee youth relocating and starting from nothing. Therefore, it’s absolutely necessary to have UG to guide youth in to build self-confidence to perform well in school, to be a productive member of society and be a good role model to peers and siblings.
